The research pinpoints a specific ‍mechanism, which scientists believe will bolster ongoing clinical trials and could lead to targeted aspirin use or the development of new drugs to prevent‍ cancer metastasis.

Researchers at the University of‍ Cambridge made ⁢the revelation while investigating metastasis, the process by which cancer spreads.They noted that metastasis accounts for 90% of cancer-related deaths. The team focused on how the immune system responds when cancer cells break away from a primary tumor, making them vulnerable⁢ to immune attack.

The study revealed that a protein⁢ called ARHGEF1 suppresses T cells, a type of immune ⁤cell that can‍ eliminate metastatic cancer‍ cells. Rahul roychoudhuri, a professor from the University ⁤of cambridge who led the study, noted the potential for therapies ⁤targeting this early vulnerability⁢ to prevent cancer recurrence.‍ He added that aspirin, or⁢ similar drugs, could be a more affordable and globally accessible option compared to antibody-based therapies.

Researchers plan to ⁤collaborate with Professor Ruth Langley at University College london’s MRC Clinical Trials unit, who leads the Add-Aspirin clinical trial.
