ASRock has introduced the HUDIMM memory standard, a DDR5 innovation featuring a single sub-channel design aimed at reducing memory costs for budget PC builds and business desktops.

The HUDIMM standard, short for Half Unbuffered DIMM, uses only one of the two 40-bit sub-channels found in standard DDR5 UDIMMs, resulting in half the bandwidth and half the memory density of conventional modules.

This design allows ASRock to address ongoing DDR5 memory shortages and high prices by enabling more affordable memory configurations, particularly for entry-level systems and office desktops that do not require peak performance.

ASRock partnered with Team Group to manufacture the first HUDIMM memory modules, which have been tested and confirmed to work on Intel 600-series, 700-series, and 800-series chipset motherboards.

Support for HUDIMM requires UEFI firmware-level awareness of the standard, and ASRock plans to release firmware updates for its compatible motherboards to enable the feature.

The company also developed HSODIMM, a DDR5 SO-DIMM variant with the same single sub-channel architecture, intended for use in ASRock’s Deskmini series mini-PCs built on mobile-on-desktop platforms.

ASRock designed HUDIMMs to be compatible with standard UDIMMs, allowing users to mix and match modules—for example, pairing an 8 GB HUDIMM with a 16 GB UDIMM—to achieve asymmetric total capacities like 24 GB while utilizing at least three DDR5 sub-channels for improved bandwidth flexibility.

The innovation targets the client computing market during a period of constrained DDR5 supply and elevated prices, offering a practical solution to maintain access to modern platforms without the cost premium of full-spec memory.

ASRock is additionally developing a new line of Socket LGA1700 motherboards that will support both DDR4 and DDR5 memory slots, further broadening compatibility options for cost-conscious builders.
