Assam Board Exams: Mathematics Paper Presents Challenges for Students

Guwahati, Assam – February 19, 2026 – The recent Class 9 and 10 Mathematics examinations administered by the SEBA (Assam Secondary Education Board) have revealed a mixed experience for students, with educators noting a particularly challenging set of Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) in the Basic Mathematics paper.

Tanmoy Das, PGT Mathematics at Modern English School in Kahilipara, Guwahati, described the Basic Mathematics examination as being of moderate difficulty overall. However, he highlighted the length and complexity of the MCQs as a significant hurdle for students. “While the paper followed a familiar structure, the Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) stood out for being notably lengthy,” Das explained. “These initial questions required students to invest significant time in analysis and calculation, demanding more than just a surface-level understanding to navigate the options effectively.”

The emphasis on analytical skills within the MCQs suggests a shift towards testing deeper comprehension of mathematical concepts, rather than rote memorization. Students were required to dedicate considerable time to each question, carefully working through calculations and evaluating potential answers.

In contrast to the demanding MCQs, Das praised the case study questions for their clarity and accessibility. “The case study questions were lauded for their directness and clarity,” he said. “Since many of these problems reflected scenarios that students had repeatedly practiced, they were considered common and highly approachable.” This suggests that the board is attempting to balance theoretical knowledge with practical application, presenting students with real-world scenarios to test their problem-solving abilities.

The SEBA Assam Class 9 Mathematics curriculum, aligned with the latest SCERT Assam syllabus, covers a broad range of topics including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, and probability. Resources available online, such as those offered by Ospin Academy, provide chapter-wise solutions, MCQs, and additional questions designed to aid student understanding and exam preparation.

The updated SEBA exam format now includes 45 MCQs in core subjects like English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Science, as highlighted by Assam Eduverse. This increased emphasis on objective-style questions underscores the importance of focused revision and practice for students preparing for both school tests and board exams.

Recent reports indicate that the CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) Class 10 Mathematics Standard paper, administered nationally on February 17, 2026, was also considered to be of moderate difficulty. However, feedback from schools suggests that the CBSE Mathematics Standard paper was closely aligned with the NCERT syllabus, potentially easing the burden on students who had diligently followed the prescribed curriculum.

The CBSE board exams for 2026 commenced on February 17th, with over 43 lakh students participating across the country. The exams are being conducted in a single shift from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm, emphasizing the importance of timely arrival at examination centers. Students who are not satisfied with their performance will have the opportunity to appear for improvement examinations, as per CBSE norms.

While the CBSE does not release official answer keys for board examinations, students and educators are relying on self-assessment and analysis of the question papers to gauge performance and identify areas for improvement. The results of the CBSE board exams are expected to be declared in May 2026.

The evolving landscape of board examinations in India, with increased emphasis on MCQs and case study-based questions, necessitates a shift in student preparation strategies. A focus on conceptual understanding, analytical skills, and effective time management will be crucial for success in these increasingly challenging assessments.
