Assam Renames Karimganj to Sribhumi: CM Himanta’s Major Announcement
Assam District Renamed to Sribhumi
Assam’s government has decided to rename Karimganj district in Barak Valley to Sribhumi. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed this change during a press conference after a cabinet meeting.
Himanta stated that more than a century ago, Rabindranath Tagore referred to the area as “Sribhumi,” meaning the land of Maa Lakshmi. The rebranding meets a long-standing demand from the local population.
The Chief Minister emphasized that this name change aligns with the wishes and aspirations of the residents. He noted that the government will continue to modify names that lack historical significance or dictionary references, describing this as a normal practice within their policy.
In addition to the name change, the cabinet plans to release the panchayat election voter list by December to complete the election process by February 10 next year.
The Chief Minister also announced an upcoming investment and infrastructure summit on February 24, 2025, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend. To promote this summit, the Assam government will conduct international roadshows in various Indian cities to attract participants.
Moreover, over 94 rural development projects received approval during the cabinet meeting.
