Actor Nandini Kashyap Booked Under New Criminal Laws for Fatal Hit-and-Run

Guwahati: Actor Nandini Kashyap has been booked under the newly enacted Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) following a fatal hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of a Guwahati Municipal corporation (GMC) worker. The case includes charges under BNS 105 (culpable homicide not amounting too murder) and BNSS 125B (hit-and-run causing death), both of which are non-bailable offences.
The Tragic Incident
The incident occurred late at night when Kashyap, allegedly driving a speeding Bolero SUV, struck Samiul Haque. Haque was on duty wiht a GMC team, engaged in repairing streetlights at the time of the accident. Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle did not stop after hitting the GMC worker.
“The accident occurred late at night, but we did not receive any data on July 25.We came to know about the incident onyl on July 26, after the victim’s family lodged a complaint,” an investigating officer stated.Following the complaint, police summoned Kashyap for questioning.
“Though there were allegations that she was under the influence of alcohol, it was not possible to establish because we came to know about the incident the next day,” the officer added, highlighting the challenges in immediate evidence collection.
Victim’s Condition and Demise
Samiul Haque was rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) by his colleagues. He received treatment for four days before his condition deteriorated, necessitating a transfer to Apollo Hospital. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries on July 29, having sustained severe head injuries and multiple fractures.
Eyewitness Accounts and Police Action
GMC workers present at the scene claimed they pursued the vehicle after the accident. They managed to track it to an apartment complex in Kahilipara. reports suggest Kashyap attempted to conceal the SUV and allegedly assaulted a bystander who was recording the incident on their phone.Police have seized two vehicles belonging to Kashyap and submitted them to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for examination. CCTV footage from the vicinity of the accident has also been collected as crucial evidence for the ongoing investigation.
Public Outrage and Demands for Justice
The incident has sparked widespread outrage across Assam. The All Assam Polytechnic Students’ Union (AAPSU) filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the Dispur Police Station, vehemently demanding swift justice for Samiul haque.
Samiul’s mother, speaking to reporters in tears, expressed her grief and disappointment: “We want justice for our son. She (Nandini) didn’t even come to see him once. She had promised to take care of his treatment but abandoned us when we needed help the most.”
Social media platforms have been inundated with calls for stringent action against Kashyap. In response to the public outcry, DCP Bora confirmed that the actor has been cooperating with the investigation and had visited the police station on July 26.
Professional Repercussions
amidst the growing criticism, Rajdhani Theatre has officially terminated its contract with Nandini Kashyap. The theatre group, which had a two-year agreement with the actress, issued a statement condemning the incident and formally distancing itself from her actions.
