Assam Final Voter List Released: Over 2.43 Lakh Names Deleted Ahead of Elections
The final electoral roll for Assam has been released, revealing the deletion of 2.43 lakh names from the draft roll following a Special Revision (SR) process. Unlike similar revisions undertaken in 12 other states and Union Territories, Assam’s SR focused on door-to-door verification rather than relying on form submissions or document collection.
A total of 29,656 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) were deployed across the state to conduct the verification process.
The finalized roll reflects a total of 2,52,01,624 electors, representing a 1.35 percent increase compared to the final roll published in January 2025. Between January 6 and December 27 of last year, the SR process recorded 7,86,841 additions to the voter list and 4,47,196 deletions.
During the revision, officials identified 4,78,992 deceased electors, 5,23,680 electors who had shifted residence, and 53,619 instances of multiple entries. The Election Commission has stated that these identified names will be processed for deletion or shifting only after formal applications are received and reviewed during the claims and objections period.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced plans for an “extensive” Special Intensive Revision (SIR) to take place in the state following the upcoming Assembly elections. Sarma stated this would be a comprehensive effort to further refine the voter list.
The Election Commission has also been reviewing Assam’s preparedness for the Assembly elections, anticipated to be held in March or April. A two-day meeting was held to assess district-level readiness, security arrangements, and coordination with enforcement agencies.
The SR process aimed to ensure a clean and accurate voter list ahead of the elections, a crucial step in maintaining the integrity of the democratic process in the state. The focus on door-to-door verification represents a distinct approach compared to other regions, emphasizing direct engagement with voters to confirm their eligibility and address any discrepancies.
The deletion of over two lakh names underscores the ongoing efforts to remove ineligible voters from the rolls, including those who have passed away, moved out of the state, or are registered multiple times. The subsequent SIR, as announced by the Chief Minister, signals a continued commitment to maintaining a robust and reliable electoral system in Assam.
