Marc-Alexis Coté is suing Ubisoft for nearly one million dollars. According to the former head⁢ of the Assassin’s Creed series, the French company allegedly pushed him to resign following the launch of⁢ Assassin’s Creed⁢ Shadows.

Coté submitted documents to the Superior Court of‍ Quebec detailing the events⁢ leading to‌ his departure, ‌specifically citing a meeting in the summer of 2025 where⁣ it became clear he would no longer⁢ lead Assassin’s ‍Creed.

This ‍occurred within the context⁢ of Ubisoft’s internal reorganization, culminating last⁤ year with the ‌creation of Vantage studios, ‌designed to⁤ house the ‍publisher’s most profitable franchises, including Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six: Siege.

According⁤ to‍ coté’s complaint, the new ⁤model involved hiring a Head of franchise with ⁣oversight of all major ‍intellectual properties: a change that would effectively demote him, and for ⁣which ⁢the ‌position was only available in France.

The company offered Coté alternative roles, which he refused, requesting to be bought out in October 2025. The day after his request, Ubisoft ‌announced his “voluntary departure” internally and publicly.

It wasn’t an Intentional⁢ Farewell

Marc-Alexis Coté’s departure ⁣was not intentional, ⁣as ‍ he revealed last October, explaining that he did not make‌ that decision and⁢ still has ⁣a great passion for the series, which he has been ‌working‌ on as Assassin’s creed Brotherhood.

In addition to damages and severance pay, Coté also requested to be⁢ released from the non-compete⁢ clause that limits his opportunities in the video game industry.
