Assata Shakur Dies: Cuba, Read Her Letter to Pope
prisoned. Is that justice? witnesses who testified on my behalf were harassed and threatened. Is that justice? Evidence that proved my innocence was suppressed. Is that justice? The news media was used to spread false and slanderous information about me. Is that justice? I was shot and left to die. Is that justice?
I am asking you, Your Holiness, to intervene on my behalf. I am asking you to look into my case and to speak out against the injustices that I have suffered. I am asking you to use your influence to help me return to my family in the United States. I am asking you to help me obtain justice.
I am not asking you to agree with my political beliefs. I am simply asking you to recognize that I am a human being who has been unjustly persecuted. I am asking you to recognize that I have a right to a fair trial. I am asking you to recognize that I have a right to live in peace and security.
I believe that you have the power to make a difference in my life.I believe that you have the power to help me obtain justice. I believe that you have the power to help me return to my family. I am asking you to use that power.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
