Astell&Kern SP4000 Copper: New Flagship Player & Luxury Accessories

by Lisa Park - Tech Editor

Astell&Kern has expanded its high-end audio offerings with the launch of the A&ultima SP4000 Copper, a limited-edition portable digital audio player. The company simultaneously released the Collector’s Atelier, a premium leather valet designed to complement the player and cater to audiophiles.

The SP4000 Copper builds upon Astell&Kern’s existing SP4000 platform, but distinguishes itself through the use of a 99.98% pure copper chassis. This material choice isn’t purely aesthetic; copper is valued for its audio properties and presents significant manufacturing challenges. Astell&Kern states the player requires a “multi-layer stabilisation process and extremely precise machining” to ensure durability and optimal signal transfer, aiming for improved shielding and a cleaner audio signal.

Internally, the SP4000 Copper retains the high-end components of the standard SP4000, including a quad-DAC setup and octa-circuit architecture. However, Astell&Kern claims the copper chassis actively shapes the sound profile, resulting in “deeper, more authoritative bass, a richer midrange, and treble that decays more naturally.” The tuning is geared towards achieving a sound as close as possible to the original recording.

The A&ultima SP4000 Copper is a limited edition product, priced at £3999 / $4499 / €4699 as of .

Complementing the SP4000 Copper is the Collector’s Atelier, a leather valet designed to store the player, earphones, and accessories. The valet is crafted from Perlinger leather, sourced from a German tannery established in 1864. A specialized shrinking process is used to preserve the leather’s natural grain while enhancing its durability, allowing it to age gracefully.

The Collector’s Atelier is available now for £229 / $260.

Astell&Kern also announced the official availability of two previously unveiled products. The AK HC5, a compact USB DAC priced at £399, is aimed at portable listening setups. STELLA, a reference-grade earphone developed in collaboration with Volk Audio and Grammy-winning mastering engineer Michael Graves, represents the pinnacle of Astell&Kern’s in-ear headphone lineup.

These releases collectively demonstrate Astell&Kern’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of portable audio. The company is focusing on high-end materials, sound quality, and craftsmanship, targeting a niche market of listeners willing to invest in the best possible audio experience, even while on the move.
