Birmingham, AL – Aston Villa aim to close out 2023 with a victory when they host Brighton & Hove Albion at Villa Park on Saturday. The Villans are seeking back-to-back wins to finish the calendar year, a feat they haven’t accomplished as 2008.

Villa enter the match on the heels of a 3-0 defeat at Newcastle, a result manager Unai Emery is eager to put behind them.

“We need to bounce back strong,” Emery said. “Brighton will be a tough opponent, but we are persistent to finish the year on a positive note in front of our home fans.”

Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins celebrates a goal

Historically, Villa have enjoyed success against brighton, winning five consecutive matches before a 1-0 loss in May. Though,Brighton have struggled on the road against Villa, winning just once in 14 attempts.

Adding intrigue to the matchup is the prolific scoring record of Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins against Brighton. Watkins has netted six goals against the Seagulls, including a hat-trick in a resounding 6-1 victory last season.

Brighton, meanwhile, will be looking to avoid a third consecutive defeat at Villa Park. The Seagulls have been a potent force on the road this season, scoring 14 goals, but have struggled to convert early leads into victories.

“We need to be more clinical in front of goal,” Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi said. “We’ve created chances, but haven’t been able to capitalize on them consistently.”

With both teams eager to end the year on a high note, Saturday’s clash promises to be a thrilling encounter.

Can Villa keep Thier Brighton Streak Alive? A Fan’s Outlook

At a local pub, lifelong Aston Villa supporter Emma and her friend David discussed the upcoming match.

“I always am,especially at Villa Park!” Emma said when asked about her confidence. “Brighton are tough, though,so it won’t be easy.”

David pointed to Villa’s recent loss to Newcastle.”Did you see that newcastle realy hammered Villa last week?”

“Yeah, a tough loss,” Emma acknowledged, “but Emery will have them fired up this time. They’re desperate to finish the year strong, haven’t had back-to-back wins since 2008!”

David was surprised. “Wow, that’s a long time ago! I didn’t realize Villa have such a good history against Brighton, five wins in a row!”

“Exactly!” Emma exclaimed. “And remember Ollie Watkins?”

“The goal machine?” David asked.

“Yep,” Emma said. “He loves playing against Brighton. Remember that hat-trick last season?”

“I dimly recall a lot of goals!” David laughed.

“Six in total!” Emma reminded him. “He seems to have their number. But Brighton need a win too, haven’t won at Villa Park in ages.”

“So, who do you think will come out on top?” David asked.

“It’s going to be close, David,” emma predicted. “Brighton’s attack is risky, but Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi said they need to be more clinical. If Watkins gets going, though… I think home advantage will be key.”

“Let’s hope for a Villa victory to end the year on a high!” David toasted.”You know it!” Emma agreed.

Can Villa Climb Higher? Inside the Big Brighton Match

Liam: Hey Sarah, have you heard about the Aston Villa match against Brighton this weekend?

Sarah: I saw something about it, but I’m not sure what’s going on with Villa lately. How are they doing?

Liam: They’re right in the mix, Sarah! It’s a huge game for both teams. Villa want to finish the year with two wins in a row, something they haven’t done as 2008 – crazy, right?

sarah: Wow! That’s a long time. So, they’ve been struggling then?

Liam: Not exactly. They just lost to Newcastle, which was rough, but before that, they had a few good wins. Their manager, Unai Emery, wants to bounce back strong.

Sarah: And what about Brighton?

Liam: Brighton are really good on the road this season. They’ve scored loads of goals, but they’ve also had trouble holding onto leads.

Sarah: Sounds like a tight match then. Who do you think has the edge?

Liam: Well, historically, Villa have been dominant against them.

They won five in a row before Brighton beat them in May. plus, there’s Ollie Watkins!

Sarah: Who’s that?

Liam: He’s Villa’s striker – and Brighton seem to be his favourite opponent! He’s scored six goals against them, including a hat-trick last season.

Sarah: So, you think villa will win?

Liam: I think Villa have a real chance. The crowd’s going to be rocking at Villa Park. It’s going to be a tough match though – Brighton are hungry for a win too. But if Watkins can find the net…

Sarah: Sounds like a match I need to watch!
