Aston Villa’s D’Martínez loses 0-1 to Club Brugge in Champions League
The Bad Boys failed to maintain a perfect record in their trip to Belgium and suffered their first loss in the Champions League.
The Belgian side broke the undefeated streak of an English side that included Argentine Emiliano “D’Boss” Martinez. The only goal of the game was a bizarre penalty awarded after a handball foul by Tyrone Mies, which was converted by Hans Van Aken. The home side succeeded in breaking the resolve of a Birmingham side who came to take the three points. The Bad Boys have now gone on a three-game losing streak that includes the League Cup (1-2 loss to Crystal Palace) and the Premier League (1-4 loss to Tottenham).
Emiliano Martinez arrived at Belgium’s Jan Breidel Stadium on the rise in the Champions League. Young Boys (3-0), Bayern Munich (1-0) and Bologna (2-0) all failed to penetrate the Argentine goalkeeper’s defense, but Club Brugge ended his impressive clean sheet streak in the fourth game of the competition.
A large part of this defeat was due to a big mistake made by England defender Tyrone Mies early in the second half. D’Ebou took control of the play, which started on defense, but the frantic defender unknowingly committed a handball foul. He put the ball down and tried to play, but German referee Tobias Stiller did not hesitate to award a penalty. This decision was confirmed by VAR referee Benjamin Brand.
Mies, who had previously been booked, avoided a second yellow card for this unusual foul, but Martinez failed to save Hans Van Aken’s penalty kick, giving the home side a 1-0 lead. This case is similar to a situation in Argentine football where defender Paolo Goltz, wearing a Coron shirt, handed a penalty to Independiente for handballing in his own area.

Despite this setback, the Argentine goalkeeper made several good saves in the first half of this Champions League clash. In particular, in the 29th minute, he bounced Ferran Zutklar’s shot off the post and immediately caught Christos Jolis’ shot outside the box.
