Astronomers Discover a slew ‍of New Satellites Orbiting the Ringed Planet

March 23, 2025

An international team of astronomers has identified 128 new moons orbiting saturn, bringing the planet’s total to 274. This is the highest number of known moons of any planet in the solar system.

The‌ discoveries were made through repeated‍ observations of Saturn between‍ 2019 and 2021.⁢ The search ⁣for‍ moons ⁤around gas giants is challenging due to ‌the small size of many of these cosmic bodies.

The Minor Planet⁣ Center⁣ has confirmed ‍the new findings.

Jupiter Trails‍ in Lunar ⁣Count

Jupiter, with 95 confirmed moons, comes in second. Scientists believe the number of moons ⁤for both planets may still increase, but it is expected that Saturn will remain in the lead.

Irregular Moons: ⁣Captured Wanderers

The newly identified moons are classified as irregular moons. This refers to their orbits, which are distant from the planet, highly ⁤inclined, elliptical, and often in ⁣the opposite direction of Saturn’s rotation.

Unlike regular moons, ‍which have more circular ‌orbits around a planet’s ⁣equator,‍ irregular moons are believed to be captured⁤ objects, frequently enough small, measuring only a few kilometers in diameter.

Debris from Ancient Collisions

Researchers suggest that these irregular moons are likely debris ⁤from past collisions⁢ between moons or with ‍comets. It’s possible that many of these irregular moons originated from a single, relatively recent collision.

How many moons does Saturn have?

As of March 2025, Saturn has a staggering 274 confirmed moons, making⁤ it the planet with⁢ the most known moons in our solar system.

How⁢ were these new moons ⁢discovered?

The discoveries were made through repeated observations of Saturn between 2019 and 2021. The small size of these cosmic bodies makes the search for moons around gas giants quite challenging.

How does Saturn’s moon count‌ compare to other planets?

Saturn far surpasses other planets in our solar system⁣ in terms of its number of moons. Jupiter, such as, has 95 confirmed⁣ moons, placing it in second position. Uranus has 28 moons and Neptune with a total of 16 moons.

What is‍ the Minor Planet Center’s role?

The Minor Planet Center has confirmed the recent findings of the new moons around Saturn, validating the discoveries.

What are irregular moons?

The newly identified moons are classified as irregular moons. This means their orbits are:

  • Distant from the planet
  • Highly ‍inclined
  • Elliptical
  • Frequently enough in the opposite direction of saturn’s rotation

Unlike‌ regular moons, these are believed to‍ be captured objects.

Where do these irregular moons come from?

Researchers suggest these irregular moons are‌ likely debris from past collisions between moons or ⁤with comets. It’s possible that many originated from a single, relatively recent collision.

Key Moon⁢ Counts‍ Comparison

Here’s a comparison of the moon ⁣counts of Saturn and other planets:

Planet Number of Moons (approx.)
Saturn 274
Jupiter 95
Uranus 28
Neptune 16
