DALLAS – The Arizona State Sun Devils men’s tennis team delivered a statement performance at the ITA Indoor National Championships on Sunday, upsetting No. 16 Clemson 4-3 in a tightly contested match. The victory marked ASU’s tenth win of the season, achieved just one month into the campaign, and secured their third win against a ranked opponent this year.
The Sun Devils, ranked No. 22, overcame a recent slump in doubles play, capturing the doubles point with victories from the first and second pairings. Ofek Shimanov and Bor Artnak defeated Viktor Markov and Henrik Bladelius 7-5, while Shu Matsuoka and Roi Ginat topped Noa Vukadin and Manuel Plunger. This early advantage proved crucial in a match that would go down to the wire.
Clemson responded in singles competition, with Noa Vukadin leveling the score at 1-1 by defeating Ofek Shimanov in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. However, ASU quickly regained the lead as Jelani Sarr secured his 11th singles win of the season, defeating Marco Mesarovic 7-5, 6-2, pushing the Sun Devils ahead 2-1.
The momentum continued to swing as Henrik Bladelius of Clemson defeated Milos Mikovic 7-6(7), 6-3, tying the match at two apiece. Bor Artnak then provided a significant boost for Arizona State, battling to a three-set victory over Clemson’s 67th-ranked Viktor Markov, 4-6, 6-4, 6-6. This win gave ASU a 3-2 lead, but the match remained far from settled.
Matisse Farzam of Clemson answered with a hard-fought win over Shu Matsuoka, 7-6(4), 7-6(5), knotting the score at 3-3. All eyes then turned to court six, where Roi Ginat faced Manuel Plunger. After dropping the first set 6-4, Ginat demonstrated remarkable resilience, winning the second set in a tiebreak, 7-6(2). He then dominated the third set, winning six consecutive games to clinch the match for Arizona State, 4-3.
The singles competition saw a mix of results for both teams. In addition to Artnak’s victory over Markov and Sarr’s win against Mesarovic, Ginat’s clutch performance proved decisive. Vukadin’s win over Shimanov and Bladelius’s victory over Mikovic were key for Clemson, while Farzam’s win over Matsuoka kept the Tigers within striking distance.
The doubles point proved pivotal, with Shimanov and Artnak setting the tone for ASU. While Marko Mesarovic and Matisse Farzam managed to secure a doubles win for Clemson over Jelani Sarr and Kristof Minarik, the early lead established by the Sun Devils proved insurmountable.
This victory over Clemson represents a significant step forward for the Arizona State men’s tennis program. Reaching the 10-win mark so early in the season demonstrates the team’s potential and consistency. The win also provides valuable momentum as they prepare for their next challenge.
Looking ahead, the Sun Devils will enjoy a week off before hosting the fourth-annual Diablos Collegiate Invitational at Kiwanis Park on February 27-28. Opponents and match times are yet to be announced, but the team will undoubtedly look to build on this impressive victory.
