Asus ROG Laptops Experiencing Performance issues: Stuttering, Audio Problems, and GPU Cycling
A range of Asus ROG gaming laptops, including teh Strix Scar and Zephyrus lines, are reportedly suffering from performance issues. Users are experiencing problems like stuttering during YouTube playback, audio crackling and pops on Discord, and random mouse cursor freezes.
A user named Zephkek, after extensive troubleshooting, believes the root cause lies within Asus’ BIOS firmware. Using LatencyMon, they identified a bottleneck caused by interrupt requests on a single CPU core, sometimes lasting up to 90 seconds. This disrupts performance and causes stuttering as the system juggles core priorities.
Further inquiry revealed a strange pattern of the dedicated GPU repeatedly powering on and off every 15-30 seconds, even during tasks requiring consistent GPU activity.
Zephkek has pinpointed three specific problems:
* Interrupt Context Misunderstanding: The BIOS isn’t properly handling interrupt contexts, leading to needless delays.
* Improper Interrupt Clearing: Interrupt requests aren’t being cleared correctly, causing them to loop.
* Unaware GPU Power Cycling: The GPU power cycling doesn’t identify which GPU (integrated or dedicated) is currently in use.
Zephkek also traced the first reports of these issues back to the Asus ROG forum (https://rog-forum.asus.com/t5/rog-strix-series/g15-advantage-edition-g513qy-severe-dpc-latency-audio-dropouts/m-p/809512).
