Atalanta Stuns Dortmund with Late Comeback in Champions League

February 26, 2026 David Thompson - Sports Editor Sports

BERGAMO, Italy – In a Champions League night brimming with late drama, Atalanta secured a place in the round of 16 with a stunning 4-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund on February 25, 2026. The aggregate score finished 4-3 in favor of the Italian side, completing a remarkable turnaround after a 2-0 first-leg defeat in Germany.

The match, played in Bergamo, saw a flurry of goals and controversy, culminating in a penalty awarded to Atalanta deep into stoppage time. Lazar Samardzic calmly converted the spot-kick, sending Dortmund crashing out of the competition and ensuring Italian representation will continue in Europe’s premier club tournament.

Atalanta took an early lead in the 5th minute through Gianluca Scamacca, igniting the home crowd. The momentum continued to build for the Serie A side as Davide Zappacosta doubled their advantage just before halftime, with a shot deflected in off Dortmund defender Ramy Bensebaini. The score was 2-0 at the break, setting the stage for a tense second half.

Dortmund, needing to respond, found the back of the net in the 75th minute through Karim Adeyemi, offering a glimmer of hope. However, Atalanta remained resolute, and the game took a dramatic turn in the dying moments.

As the clock ticked past the nine-minute mark of stoppage time – already an extended period due to earlier disruptions – a potential match-winning opportunity arose for Atalanta. A cross into the penalty area was aimed towards Nikola Krstovic, but a reckless challenge from Bensebaini, catching Krstovic on the head, led to a VAR review. The review resulted in a penalty being awarded to Atalanta and a second yellow card for Bensebaini, meaning a sending off for the Dortmund defender.

Samardzic stepped up and expertly dispatched the penalty into the top corner, sparking wild celebrations amongst the Atalanta players, and fans. The goal, timed at seven minutes and 53 seconds into stoppage time, is the second-latest regulation goal in UEFA Champions League history and the latest ever in the knockout stage.

“Everyone had written us off,” said Zappacosta, reflecting the team’s underdog status. “But… we always believe and we never give up.” His words encapsulate the spirit of a team that refused to surrender, even when facing a seemingly insurmountable challenge.

The match was not without its moments of frustration for Dortmund. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel was kept busy throughout the first half, denying Nicola Zalewski on multiple occasions. In the second half, Marco Carnesecchi, Atalanta’s goalkeeper, produced a crucial save to deny Serhou Guirassy, maintaining their two-goal cushion. Maximilian Beier also came close for Dortmund, hitting the post in the 53rd minute.

The dramatic conclusion overshadowed a game that showcased Atalanta’s attacking prowess and defensive resilience. Their ability to capitalize on Dortmund’s mistakes and maintain composure under pressure proved decisive. The victory marks a significant achievement for the club, securing their place among Europe’s elite in the round of 16.

Atalanta will now await the draw on Friday to discover their opponent in the next round, with potential matchups against Arsenal or Bayern Munich. For Dortmund, the defeat represents a disappointing end to their Champions League campaign, leaving them to focus on domestic competitions.

The game also highlighted the increasing importance of VAR in crucial moments. The late penalty decision, confirmed by video review, ultimately decided the fate of both teams, demonstrating the technology’s impact on the modern game. The incident involving Bensebaini and Krstovic was particularly contentious, with the Dortmund defender’s challenge deemed reckless enough to warrant a penalty and a sending off.

The result is a testament to Atalanta’s growth as a European force. Having overcome a two-goal deficit from the first leg, they demonstrated a level of determination and tactical flexibility that will serve them well in the next stage of the competition. Their journey in the Champions League continues, fueled by a belief that they can compete with the best teams in Europe.
