Athletics’ Denzel Clarke Steals Homerun from Angels’ Nolan Schanuel
Updated June 10, 2025
Los Angeles Angels first baseman Nolan Schanuel appeared destined for a homerun on Monday, but Oakland Athletics center fielder Denzel Clarke had other plans. Clarke’s incredible catch stole what would have been Schanuel’s fourth of the season.
During the first inning, Schanuel hit an 86 mph splitter from Athletics pitcher Grant Holman deep into center field at Angel Stadium. The ball sailed over the wall, but Clarke leaped high above the fence, snagging the ball in a stunning display of athleticism.
Holman reacted with hands raised in disbelief, while Schanuel stared in awe at Clarke’s play. Clarke managed to secure the out while narrowly avoiding a fall into the rocks beyond the outfield wall.

This isn’t the first highlight-reel catch for clarke. On May 30, he made a similar play against the Toronto Blue Jays, climbing the wall to rob Alejandro Kirk of a homerun.
Clarke,a highly-regarded prospect, was called up by the Athletics on May 23. Before Monday’s game, he was batting .224 with one homerun and three RBIs, showcasing his potential as a key player for the team. His defensive prowess, especially his ability to make game-changing catches, adds another dimension to his value.
What’s next
Clarke aims to build on his recent performances and solidify his role in center field, contributing both offensively and defensively as the Athletics continue their season.
