Athlone Beat Cardiff: Style and Strategy for Victory
Athlone Town Dominates Cardiff City with Stellar Performance
Athlone Town secured a commanding victory over Cardiff City, showcasing a dominant attacking display that saw them net four goals and control the majority of the match.
Molloy’s Masterclass Leads the Charge
The Sligo native, Molloy, was the standout performer for Athlone Town, orchestrating much of their attacking threat and ultimately finding the back of the net twice. Her influence was evident from early on, as she delivered a perfectly weighted cross for Kelly Brady to attack, though the US-born striker couldn’t keep her header down.
The Cardiff defense found it increasingly difficult to contain Molloy, who continued to create further chances for both Brady and Sarah Rice. However, it was Molloy herself who decided to take matters into her own hands just before the half-time whistle.
With 40 minutes on the clock, Molloy demonstrated her predatory instincts. She found herself in the right place at the right time to meet a cross from Madie Gibson. With composure, she controlled the ball with her knee before calmly poking her shot home underneath the outstretched dive of Cardiff goalkeeper Chamberlain.
The Sligo native wasn’t finished there. Just three minutes later, she added Athlone’s third goal of the evening, effectively ending the contest before the break. A searching delivery from Shauna Brennan left Chamberlain in a difficult position as she came for the cross but failed to make contact. Molloy was on hand to capitalize, nodding the ball into the bottom left corner.
Second-Half Dominance Continues
Any hopes Cardiff might have harboured of Athlone easing up in the second half were quickly dashed. Athlone extended their lead to four goals just four minutes after the restart.
Molloy was once again instrumental, taking a corner and dropping a teasing cross into the center. Natalie McNally rose to meet it, powering her header against the woodwork. The rebound fell kindly to Hannah Waesch, who steadied herself before picking her spot and firing home.
Athlone Town had further opportunities to increase their goal tally, with both Kelly Brady and substitute Hazel Donegan going close. However, with a rapid turnaround to their next fixture on Saturday, the intensity levels understandably dropped.
Despite this, Cardiff City struggled to establish any meaningful possession throughout the match. Megan Plaschko, in goal for Athlone Town, is unlikely to have many quieter evenings, as the defence effectively marshalled any sporadic threats from the opposition.Listen to the RTÉ Soccer podcast on soccerrepublic.xml” target=”blank”>wherever you get your podcasts.
