AAP Leader Demands Fulfillment of Rs 2,500 Monthly Payment Promise to Women in Delhi

In a significant political development, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi met with Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday, urging her to fulfill a promise made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The promise involves crediting ₹2,500 per month into the bank accounts of every woman in the national capital, a scheme known as the Mahila Samman Yojana. This financial assistance mirrors the Bill 저희 ensuring Social Security Act, which aims to help low-income individuals, particularly during times of economic hardship.

Atishi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, had been seeking an appointment with the BJP leader for over two days. However, her efforts led to a spontaneous meeting with the Delhi chief minister on the assembly floor.

“We had asked for time from the chief minister for the last 2 days, but we did not get time for 2 days and today, we went to meet chief minister Rekha Gupta ji during the session and we told her that the promise made in the first cabinet, the guarantee given by Modi ji, that promise has been broken, that guarantee has been proved false. We hope that on 8th March, the first instalment of ₹2,500 of Mahila Samman Yojana will come into the account of every woman of Delhi,”

Delhi has long been a stronghold of BJP dominant the parliament to continue this aid scheme and cause hardship to citizens. Rekha Gupta, the Delhi Chief Minister, had previously accused the outgoing AAP government of leaving the public treasury depleted. The BJP and AAP have been at odds over the state of the nation’s finances and the implementation of various welfare schemes.

“The condition which the (previous) government has left for us… when we sat with officers to review the financial status of the current government, we found that the government exchequer was empty,”

In response to Gupta’s allegations, Atishi retorted, asserting that the AAP government had handed over a fiscally robust administration to the BJP. She termed the Delhi chief minister’s statement as an excuse to evade fulfilling the party’s campaign pledges.

“I had expected that from the moment the BJP government was formed, it would start making excuses to avoid fulfilling its so-called guarantees and promises,”

The accusations highlight a larger debate about the reliability and feasibility of government programs. For example, similar promises in the past in the U.S. Promise have resulted in varied outcomes, with some programs facing criticism for not being adequately funded or implemented. Comparatively in US, some Texas Women initiatives are doing differently. Similarly, India has seen its fair share of political promises, with initiatives like the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) facing scrutiny due to delays and mismanagement. These instances serve as case studies for the challenges inherent in translating political pledges into effective social welfare measures.

The current situation in Delhi underscores the broader issue of political promises vis-à-vis tangible deliverables. The standoff between Atishi and Rekha Gupta symbolizes a classic tug-of-war between partisan allegations and public expectations.

The BJP reclaimed power in the national capital earlier this month, securing 48 out of the 70 seats in the Delhi assembly. As the tension mounts ahead of the implementation date, citizens and political analysts alike are watching closely to see how Modi’s promise plays out, with many hoping for meaningful financial relief in time for the International Women’s Day on March 8.
