Atlanta Suburbs in Shock: 14-Year-Old Student Unleashes Deadly Rampage at Local High School, Claiming 4 Lives
Georgia High School Shooting Leaves 4 Dead, 9 Injured
A shooting occurred at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, near Atlanta, on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of four people and injuring at least nine others. The gunman, identified as a 14-year-old student, was detained by school resource officers within minutes of the shooting.
Students were forced to take shelter in classrooms before being directed to the football field, where they were met by police and rescue teams. Parents rushed to the school to confirm their children’s safety.
The victims have been identified as two students and two teachers at Apalachee High School. At least nine people were taken to hospital with injuries.
Chris Hosey, director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, stated that the suspect, a student at the school, immediately surrendered and was detained. He is currently charged with murder as an adult.
Authorities are still investigating how the suspect obtained the gun and brought it into the school. “It’s still a very active investigation,” Hosey said, with a lot of interviews and crime scene work to be done.
Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, saying, “My heart aches for these children, my heart aches for our community. But I want to be very clear, hate will not prevail in this county. I want to make it clear to everyone that love will triumph over what happened today.”
School Superintendent Dallas LeDuff announced that county schools will be closed this week to cooperate with the investigation, but counseling will be provided to students and staff.

Jacob King, a sophomore football player at Apalachee High School, described the scene, saying he was taking a nap in his world history class when he heard about 10 gunshots. King said he initially did not believe the shooting was real until he heard an officer yell to someone, “Drop your gun.”
Ashley Enoh, whose brother and sister attend Apalachee High School, received a text message from her brother saying, “Just wanted to tell you I love you.” When she asked in a family group chat what was going on, her brother said there was a shooter at the school.
The White House stated that President Joe Biden had been briefed on the shooting and that the administration would coordinate actions with federal, state, and local officials as it received more information.
The incident also triggered a chain reaction in Atlanta, where patrols at local schools were stepped up. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said that out of an abundance of caution, patrols at Atlanta schools would continue for the rest of the day.
