Jakarta – Atletico Madrid is making significant moves in the summer transfer window, fueling speculation that Diego Simeone’s squad is poised to challenge for the Spanish League title. With a substantial financial outlay, the club appears to have removed any lingering excuses for not securing the coveted championship.
A Summer of Strategic Signings
atletico has already invested a considerable €152 million to bring in six new players, bolstering their ranks with talent from across Europe and South America. The new recruits include Matteo Ruggeri from Atalanta, Alex Baena from Villarreal, Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis, Thiago Almada from Botafogo, Marc Pubill from Almeria, and David Hancko from Feyenoord.
Along with these permanent signings, Atletico has also secured the services of Clement lenglet on loan from Barcelona and Juan Musso from Atalanta. To ensure squad balance and manage financial commitments, the club has also seen several departures, including Cesar Azpilicueta, Axel Witsel, Angel Correa, Saul Niguez, Rodrigo de Paul, Samuel Lino, and Thomas Lemar.
Saul Niguez Weighs In: “No More Reasons”
Saul Niguez, who recently moved to Flamengo, believes Atletico’s aggressive transfer strategy signals a strong financial position, making a La Liga title a clear expectation. He expressed his candid assessment to Cope, stating that the club can no longer point to financial limitations as a barrier to success.
“Atletico always has a few reasons (not to win),” Saul remarked. “Last year they spent 200 million euros, this year they spent 200 million more. They have no more reasons now, ‘Saul is paid a big salary’ … they spend a lot of money like other teams, and they have to compete for the event.”
The La Liga Landscape: A History of Dominance
For the past two decades, the La Liga title has largely been a two-horse race between Real Madrid and Barcelona. Atletico Madrid has managed to break this duopoly on two occasions, clinching the championship in 2014 and 2021.However, more often than not, their success has been defined by consistent qualification for the Champions League rather than outright league victories.
With the significant investment made this summer, the pressure is undoubtedly on Diego Simeone and his squad to deliver the La Liga crown. The club’s financial muscle and the quality of their new signings suggest that they are serious contenders, and the football world will be watching closely to see if they can finally overcome the past dominance of their rivals.
