An inquiry is underway after a rudimentary bomb partially destroyed two vehicles belonging to journalist Sigfrido Ranucci on Thursday evening in Pomezia, a town just outside Rome.
Details of the Incident
According to initial reports,the device consisted of approximately one kilogram of compressed explosives and was detonated with a lit fuse placed between two planters near the journalist’s home. The explosion caused significant damage to the cars but, fortunately, did not result in any injuries.
Investigators from the RIS Carabinieri, a specialized unit, are currently analyzing the remnants of the bomb to determine the exact type of explosive used and to perhaps identify the individuals responsible for the act of intimidation.
Search for Suspects and Vehicle
Authorities are also focusing on identifying a hooded individual reportedly seen leaving the area shortly before the explosion. A vehicle potentially used in the escape is also under scrutiny.
The car in question was discovered a short distance from the scene and has been confirmed as stolen. Though, as of today, October 18, 2024, investigators have not established any direct link between the stolen vehicle and the bombing.
Journalist’s Movements
The timing of the incident suggests the perpetrator(s) had knowlege of Ranucci’s schedule. the journalist had returned home on Thursday after being away for several days, indicating the attack was likely planned around his arrival.
