The intersection of political power and the attention economy has created a new template for public visibility, one that prioritizes social media saturation over traditional governance. This dynamic is central to the trajectory of former U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell, whose career was defined by a calculated effort to be everywhere, all at once across various digital platforms.

Swalwell first established his digital footprint in 2016 when the newspaper The Hill designated him the Snapchat king of Congress. At the time, he utilized the app to communicate directly with constituents and positioned himself as a guide for other members of Congress on how to navigate the platform.

His approach to personal branding extended beyond Snapchat to Twitter, where he inspired a trend known as Swalwelling, which involved users photographing their feet as they boarded airplanes. This focus on ephemeral, highly visual content helped construct a national profile built on cable news appearances, social media saturation, and aggressive criticism of Donald Trump.

The Performance of Digital Politics

As the digital landscape shifted, Swalwell adapted his strategy to include newer platforms and trends. In the lead-up to his entry into the race for governor of California in November 2025, he began producing TikTok content that leaned heavily into meme culture.

His TikTok activity included several high-visibility performances:

• Lip-synching to the Lady Gaga song Telephone.
• Participating in the six seven trend with his daughter.
• Performing the Beez in the Trap routine alongside a teenage content creator.

Swalwell became a prolific user of the platform X, where he adopted the increasing trend among some Democrats of using the F-word in public posts.

The Collision of Visibility and Accountability

The same mechanisms of the attention economy that amplified Swalwell’s profile eventually contributed to a moment of congressional reckoning. Shortly before reports surfaced regarding the use of profanity on X, Swalwell faced a growing volume of rumors concerning inappropriate behavior toward women, including members of his own staff.

The response from Swalwell’s campaign attempted to frame these accusations as the work of rivals collaborating with MAGA conspiracy theorists. However, the campaign determined that maintaining silence regarding the allegations was no longer a viable strategy.

The downfall of the former representative highlights the volatility of a political identity constructed through the lens of pop-culture trends and constant media presence. While the Snapchat king persona provided initial leverage and visibility, it also placed him within a high-scrutiny environment where the attention economy could rapidly shift from promotion to condemnation.
