London—british authorities have launched a nationwide police operation to track down members of⁣ child sex ‍gangs ‌who sexually exploited young girls across England from the late 1990s to the⁢ early 2010s,the ‌Home‍ Office announced Sunday.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) will lead the operation, collaborating with ⁢local police forces, according to a ministry statement. The‍ initiative will also reopen previously closed investigations. Prime Minister Keir Starmer had previously favored ⁣local inquiries but recently⁤ voiced‍ support for a national probe.

The‌ Home Office stated that the operation aims to bring justice to more survivors of grooming gangs. Justice Minister Yvette Cooper said, “Vulnerable young‌ girls, exploited in unimaginable‍ ways, are now valiant women rightly demanding justice.”

“too few listened⁤ to them then. It was a⁤ grave and‌ unforgivable failure. We are ending that now,” Cooper⁣ added, noting that ⁣police have already identified over 800 cases after she requested a review of prematurely closed⁤ files.

Decades of abuse

For decades,gangs of‌ men,predominantly of Pakistani‌ origin,targeted girls‌ and young women,mostly white and from disadvantaged backgrounds,in several English cities.

The “grooming gangs” scandal resurfaced in early January when Elon Musk accused Starmer of allowing⁣ “groups of rapists to exploit young girls without facing justice.”

The Rotherham case remains one of the most prominent examples, where nearly 1,500 minors were drugged, raped, and sexually exploited by a gang over⁤ 16 years, from⁤ 1997 to 2013.

More than 100 men have been convicted, and the number of⁤ victims ⁤is estimated ⁤in the thousands. the failures of the police and local authorities have been heavily criticized,‍ and the case is often cited by the British far-right to denounce government leniency and a two-tiered justice system.
