Auckland Rail Upgrades: short-Term Disruption for Long-Term Gains with CRL
Table of Contents
Auckland commuters have experienced temporary rail closures this year as upgrades pave the way for the City Rail Link (CRL) opening. While disruptive, officials assure the public these improvements are vital for a more frequent and reliable rail network in the future.
Preparing the Network for the CRL
KiwiRail and auckland Transport are undertaking a meaningful “rail network rebuild programme” designed to support the increased frequency the CRL anticipates. According to Dean Kimpton, CEO of kiwirail, the planned disruptions are “very specific” and necessary to bring the network up to the required standard.
“We have got very specific planned disruption between our CRL-go-live, and that’s designed to bring the network up to a standard to support the frequency that CRL anticipates, and that’s the rail network rebuild programme,” Kimpton explained.
Bobby Fischer, KiwiRail programme director, echoed this sentiment, framing the short-term inconvenience as part of a larger, beneficial project. “We’re going through a significant period of investment in the network that is all in the lead up to CRL opening, once the CRL is open that level of disruption will reduce significantly.”
Rigorous Testing Ensures Seamless Operation
Since February,KiwiRail has conducted over 1600 test trains across the network. This extensive testing isn’t limited to just the trains themselves. Fischer detailed the complete nature of the checks:
“There’s a lot of system testing that’s going on, from the signalling system right through to the station system - so the emergency systems testing, ventilation system etcetera, to make sure that when we open everything operates seamlessly as it’s meant to.”
This thorough approach aims to guarantee a smooth and safe experience for passengers once the CRL is fully operational.
A City Embraces Progress
The CRL project represents a substantial investment in Auckland’s infrastructure. Auckland Councillor Andy Baker acknowledged the disruption but highlighted the underlying optimism surrounding the project.
“Politicians we’re always pretty keen to find something to grizzle about,” Baker admitted with a chuckle. “But I think there is, underneath it all, a level of excitement and acceptance that this is what it is.”
This acceptance reflects a broader understanding that significant improvements frequently enough require temporary inconvenience.
CRL Opening Date Still to Be Confirmed
Despite the progress, an exact opening date for the CRL remains uncertain. Kimpton emphasized the importance of a realistic timeline.
“There’s still a lot to be done, and we don’t want to promise a date until we’re ready to promise a date, but you can be sure when we certainly no, you’ll know.”
KiwiRail is committed to providing a firm date as soon as it’s confidently established, ensuring the public is informed well in advance.
