Six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald experienced a frightening incident after her final performance as‍ Rose in the acclaimed revival of Gypsy on Broadway, Sunday, August ⁤17th. According too PEOPLE, a fan followed McDonald ⁢home⁢ from the Majestic Theater and demanded an autograph.

mcdonald shared her experience on Instagram Saturday, August 16th, stating the fan “snuck around and found” her and then followed her all the way to her residence. She was direct in her ⁣assessment: “That is crossing a big ol’ boundary. And just want to call that out. that’s a big no-no.⁤ That’s now messing with my safety.⁢ And it’s not right.”

The importance⁢ of Boundaries for Performers

The incident prompted McDonald to address the frequently enough-unspoken expectations placed on performers⁤ regarding post-show interactions. She explained that there are numerous reasons why actors may choose ‍not to engage at the ⁤stage door, emphasizing that⁣ it’s not a personal‍ rejection of fans.

“There’s a lot of reasons that performers don’t do the stage door,” McDonald explained. “Actors, as much as we would love to greet every single one of you after a show sometimes, we’re just fatigued and it’s hard. Some people get anxiety about doing the stage door. Some people ⁢are in a rush to catch the train⁤ so they can get home. Some ‍people avoid the stage door as of health reasons. And that’s perfectly fair.”

During ‍her run⁢ in Gypsy, mcdonald often skipped the stage door due ‍to health concerns, vocal strain, and the demands of a ⁤challenging role. She also noted the importance of family time, stating, “I’ve got a kid that I’m ⁢trying to get home to.” Her message was clear: “When you see an actor leave the stage door, if they don’t stop, leave them alone. There is a reason that they’re not stopping, and it has nothing‍ to do with you.”
