August 15 Flag Controversy: The Rift Between Arvind Kejriwal and Kailash Gahlot Explained
Kailash Gahlot Resigns from AAP Amid Leadership Strains
Kailash Gahlot, a senior leader and Minister in Delhi, resigned from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) today. His resignation follows a series of tensions with the AAP leadership that began on August 15. This discord arose during the Delhi government’s Independence Day celebrations over who would unfurl the national flag.
While Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was in jail related to a liquor policy case, he had instructed Atishi, the Education Minister, to perform the flag unfurling ceremony. However, Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena intervened, designating Gahlot for the task. The LG’s decision, rooted in the Home Department’s oversight of the Delhi Police and the ceremonial march-past, sparked a conflict between the AAP-led government and the LG’s office.
The AAP criticized this move, calling it “petty politics” and claiming it undermined their authority. Atishi condemned the LG’s intervention as “dictatorship,” questioning the BJP’s commitment to democratic principles. Gahlot’s acceptance of the LG’s decision caused a rift with Kejriwal and the AAP leadership.
In his resignation letter, Gahlot expressed his gratitude for serving as an MLA and Minister but highlighted serious challenges facing the party. He specifically noted the “Sheeshmahal” controversy, which has cast doubts on AAP’s commitment to its founding principles.
Gahlot stated in his letter, “Political ambitions have overtaken our commitment to people, leaving many promises unfulfilled.” He criticized the failure to clean the Yamuna River and noted that internal conflicts have hindered the government’s ability to serve the public.
The BJP seized on Gahlot’s resignation to argue that it reflects AAP’s internal instability and inability to fulfill promises to Delhi residents. This resignation has raised questions about the future of AAP and its governance in Delhi.
