Gabriela Bryan, Jordy Smith Triumph at Margaret river pro
Gabriela Bryan and Jordy Smith emerged victorious at the Margaret River Pro, though challenging conditions marked the finals day. Despite the slow surf, the event showcased intense competition, especially among surfers battling to avoid the mid-season cut. This year’s Margaret River Pro, part of the world Surf league (WSL) Championship Tour, highlighted the pressure and drama created by the new format.
Bryan’s win, her second consecutive at this location, positions her as a leading force in women’s surfing. She secured the highest combined total of the event (17.33) in the final against Caity Simmers. Smith’s victory came after a series of strong performances, solidifying his lead in the rankings.
The return to The Box, a challenging slab wave, added another layer of intensity. Surfers faced critical conditions as they fought to maintain thier positions on the World Tour. Crosby Colapinto’s performance against Ethan Ewing at Main Break was a highlight, as was his narrow victory over Jackson Bunch at The Box.

Jordy Smith’s path to victory included a key heat against Griffin Colapinto, where Smith scored an 8.5. However, Colapinto struggled to find opportunities, catching only one wave in the final.
After eight years without a win,Smith now has two in 2025,placing him ahead of Italo Ferreira in the standings. Ferreira, who had a strong start to the Australian leg, lost ground after early exits in multiple events.
The competition at The Box proved pivotal for several surfers. Crosby Colapinto’s crucial wins ensured his survival on the tour. Similarly, Lakey peterson delivered a standout performance, defeating Isabella Nichols and securing her place, while also saving Erin Brooks from relegation.
Bryan was particularly extraordinary, taking advantage of a rare pulse to drop the highest combined total of the event (17.33) and dispatch reigning world champ, Caity Simmers in the final.
What’s next
With the Margaret River pro concluded, the WSL Championship Tour now looks toward the Final Five Showdown at Cloudbreak. surfers will aim to build on their performances and secure a spot in the season-ending event.
