Austin ISD Back to School Kicks Off Amid Budget Cuts and State Takeover Threats

Austin ISD opened its doors on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026, for the first day of class, welcoming students back as the district navigates a historic budget deficit, recent school closures, and a potential state takeover threat from the Texas Education Agency, according to reporting by austincurrent.org.

Families returned to campuses across the district facing a turbulent start to the academic year. According to austincurrent.org, Austin ISD is operating under sweeping budget-driven changes after closing 11 schools since the end of the previous school year, including Paredes Middle School in July.

State Takeover Threat and Accountability Ratings

The first day of school arrived in the wake of severe accountability setbacks. According to austincurrent.org, Burnet and Webb middle schools each received their fifth failing accountability rating from the Texas Education Agency last week.

Should those designations become official, a state statute mandates that Education Commissioner Mike Morath must either shut down the underperforming campuses or substitute the democratically elected school board with a designated board of managers. If the ratings stand, Austin ISD will become the only Texas district this year to trigger that state law.

Budget Cuts and Consolidation Impacts

As part of $205 million in budget cuts for the 2026–27 year, the district proposed new high school bus hubs. Meanwhile, Bailey Middle School in South Austin marked the beginning of a new chapter for two school communities forced together after the closure of nearby Paredes Middle School just weeks before classes began, according to austincurrent.org. Segura proposed closing Paredes after internal testing data projected a fourth failing accountability rating, which was subsequently confirmed by the TEA.
