Austin Wildlife Rescue is currently providing care for a baby beaver, known as a kit, after the animal was discovered wandering alone on a sidewalk in Austin, Texas.
The kit was found by animal services officers, who conducted a search of the surrounding area for the kit’s mother, siblings, or other beavers. When no other beavers were located, Austin Animal Services officers transported the animal to Austin Wildlife Rescue for immediate medical attention.
Condition and Recovery
Upon arrival at the rescue facility, the baby beaver was described as being cold and weak. Staff members began immediate stabilization efforts to warm the animal and stabilize its condition.
Austin Wildlife Rescue reported that the kit has since begun rehabbing and is taking formula as it recovers. The animal is currently being monitored by staff as it grows stronger.
Causes of Separation
Wildlife officials believe the baby beaver may have been separated from its family due to heavy rain. It is suspected that the kit may have been washed out of its den during rainy weather that occurred on Thursday, April 3, 2026.
The organization noted that baby beavers are uncommon intakes for their facility. Because beavers are typically raised in family groups and often have multiple young at once, finding a single kit wandering alone is considered unusual.
The kit will remain under the care of Austin Wildlife Rescue until it is strong enough to be released back into the wild.
