Austin, Texas is poised to celebrate a significant milestone for the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail with the grand opening of the Wishbone Bridge. The bridge represents a crucial step towards creating a continuous 10-mile loop around Lady Bird Lake.

The Austin Wishbone Bridge, with its unique three-arm design, fills a critical gap in the city’s most popular walking and biking trail. The eastern end of the Butler Trail required a safe, well-lit, and traffic-free crossing over Lady Bird Lake. Runners like Sergey Karasev have been closely following the construction, expressing anticipation for the improved safety and aesthetics the bridge will provide.

“I was waiting, and waiting, and waiting,” Karasev said. “It will be safer and look better.”

The Y-shaped bridge, featuring a central plaza, is the first of its kind in Austin. It completes a car-free connection between the eastern shores of Lady Bird Lake and the Holly Peninsula. The project, managed by Laurie Thering of the City of Austin’s Capital Delivery Department, cost $25 million and was funded by the 2020 Mobility Bond.

“How unique is this design?” CBS Austin reporter Bettie Cross asked.

“I don’t think there’s another one like it in the country,” Thering responded. “It’s unique. It’s safe. It’s connectivity.”

The central plaza includes benches, bicycle parking, and fast-growing vines designed to provide shade. A fully illuminated underpass allows pedestrians and cyclists to safely pass under South Pleasant Valley Road, connecting to the new bridge. The project delivers a complete, uninterrupted loop around Lady Bird Lake, and Thering confirmed the project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget.

“We are four months ahead of schedule and under budget,” Thering stated.

The public will have the opportunity to experience the bridge firsthand and enjoy scenic views of the lake and Austin skyline during the grand opening celebration this Saturday, February 7th. The event will run from 10:00 a.m. To 12:30 p.m. At 115 S Pleasant Valley Road.

The completion of the Wishbone Bridge is not the only recent development impacting outdoor recreation in the Austin area. Travis County has also recently eased restrictions on Lake Travis, reopening areas downstream for recreational use. This follows a period of limitations, suggesting a broader trend towards increased accessibility of outdoor spaces in the region.

While the opening of the Wishbone Bridge is largely positive, the city also faces other challenges. On Tuesday, February 3rd, Austin police investigated a fatal incident on Mopac, where a body was struck by multiple vehicles. Vehicular homicide detectives are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. This underscores the ongoing need for pedestrian and cyclist safety measures, even as the city invests in infrastructure like the Wishbone Bridge.

Beyond infrastructure and safety, Austin continues to cultivate a reputation as a desirable city for specific lifestyle choices. Recent rankings place Austin as the third-best city in the United States for vegetarians and vegans. This recognition highlights the city’s growing culinary scene and commitment to diverse dietary preferences, potentially attracting residents and tourists who prioritize plant-based lifestyles.

Further afield, in the neighboring city of Kyle, police have arrested three teenagers in connection with a series of car burglaries. This incident, while separate from the Wishbone Bridge opening, illustrates the broader context of public safety concerns within the greater Austin metropolitan area. The Kyle Police Department’s swift action in this case demonstrates a commitment to addressing criminal activity and maintaining community security.

The opening of the Wishbone Bridge, occurs within a complex landscape of positive developments – increased recreational access, a thriving culinary scene – and ongoing challenges related to public safety and crime. The bridge itself represents a tangible investment in improving the quality of life for Austin residents and visitors, offering a safer and more enjoyable experience for those utilizing the popular Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail. The project’s completion ahead of schedule and under budget is a testament to effective city planning and execution, providing a model for future infrastructure projects.
