Australia Implements Security Plan Amid Fuel Crisis

Australia is currently experiencing a fuel crisis characterized by elevated petrol and diesel prices and widespread service station outages. The crisis is a result of the continued closure of the strait of Hormuz by Iran, following the start of a war between the United States, Israel, and Iran in late February 2026.

In response to the shortages, the federal government has implemented a national fuel security plan, released fuel reserves, and reduced fuel excise taxes to mitigate the impact on consumers.

Government Response and Supply Status

Energy Minister Chris Bowen has stated that Australia’s fuel shipments are secured well into May 2026. This comes as the government attempts to stabilize a market where oil shipments have been cancelled and hundreds of service stations have run empty.

The federal government’s strategy to manage the crisis includes the release of strategic reserves and the reduction of excise taxes to lower the cost of fuel at the pump. However, the complexity of the retail landscape, which involves thousands of independent businesses and various state governments, has made it difficult to obtain a comprehensive real-time picture of availability and pricing across the country.

Service Station Outages

Data analysis indicates a slight improvement in fuel availability over the week ending April 6, 2026. The number of service stations reporting a shortage of at least one type of fuel fell from more than 800 to fewer than 600 during that period.

Despite this general decline in outages, diesel supplies remain particularly unstable. As of April 6, 2026, 3.4% of all service stations in Australia had zero diesel available. This shortage is distributed across several states, including:

Wholesale diesel prices plummeted by approximately 20 cents per litre on April 2, 2026. However, these prices surged back up by about 10 cents over the following five days as global fuel costs continued to rise.

Biofuels and Public Warnings

The fuel shortage has led to a social media trend where some individuals claim to be filling their vehicle fuel tanks with cooking oil. Energy Minister Chris Bowen has urged Australians not to participate in this trend.

While warning against the unauthorized use of cooking oil, the minister noted that the government is supportive of the development of legitimate biofuels. This includes the production of biodiesel derived from vegetable oils and fats.
