yulia Navalnaya, the widow of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, has taken a position on the board of the International Anti-Corruption Foundation (IACF). The IACF was established to investigate and expose “the truth about Russian criminal power.” This move comes amidst continued international pressure on Russia following Navalny’s death in Febuary 2024.

Navalnaya’s appointment signals a continuation of her husband’s work, despite the risks involved in challenging the Russian government. The IACF, founded by Navalny, has been instrumental in uncovering alleged corruption within the Kremlin and among high-ranking officials. Alexei Navalny’s website provides further information on the foundation’s activities.
Financial Sanctions and Travel Bans
On September 3, 2024, Australia announced new targeted financial sanctions and travel bans against 14 individuals deemed responsible for suppressing political expression in Russia and enabling Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Australian foreign Minister Penny Wong stated that the human rights situation in Russia is “continuing to deteriorate with violent crackdowns aimed at suppressing human rights and anti-war advocacy.”
The Australian government released a statement reiterating its call for Russia to uphold its international human rights obligations. These new measures build upon existing sanctions imposed as 2022, specifically targeting individuals implicated in the poisoning, mistreatment, and death of Alexei Navalny.
Opposition leader Sussan Ley is scheduled to meet with Yulia navalnaya on wednesday afternoon to discuss the situation and offer support.
Alexei Navalny was a prominent critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin and a leading figure in the Russian opposition movement. He gained international recognition for his investigations into alleged corruption and his efforts to organize protests against the government. Navalny was poisoned in August 2020,an event widely attributed to the Russian security services, and later arrested upon his return to Russia in January 2021. He died in a penal colony in February 2024.
His death sparked international condemnation and renewed calls for accountability from the Russian government. Human Rights Watch has called for an self-reliant investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
