The attack began shortly after 4:00 PM AEDT. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as the attacker moved through the shopping centre, targeting individuals. The attack initially focused on the area near the escalators on Level 2. Police arrived on the scene within minutes and engaged the attacker. The Perpetrator: Joel Cauchi

Authorities are investigating his background and motives, including his online activity and any potential radicalization. Initial reports suggest he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia but was not receiving treatment at the time of the attack.
Cauchi had been living with his parents and had recently been experiencing a period of instability. He legally purchased the weapon used in the attack, a 21cm blade, and there are questions about how he was able to do so given his mental health history.
