Background and Deployment

The⁢ Australian Defence force (ADF) ‌will deploy a liaison officer to Israel as part of⁣ a US-led mission focused on stabilising Gaza, the‍ Australian Department of Defence confirmed on November 26, 2023. The ADF officer will work at a Civil Military Coordination Center, contributing to planning and‍ coordination alongside officials from other nations. This deployment aligns with⁤ Australia’s commitment to supporting⁣ international efforts‌ towards a lasting ⁢peace in the ‌region.

The United Kingdom has already dispatched a ⁤small contingent to Israel⁤ in response⁤ to the same request for assistance. The United States is also in discussions with Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates,Egypt,Qatar,Turkey, and Azerbaijan to secure further contributions to the mission. The US intends to provide up to 200 troops to support the effort, but these forces will not be deployed *within* Gaza itself.

Mission Objectives and Trump’s Ceasefire Plan

The task force’s primary goal is to⁢ support the initial‍ stages of⁤ the truce ⁣between Israel and Hamas and to advance US‍ President Donald Trump’s 20-point ceasefire plan. With a ceasefire in place for 12 days as of November 26, 2023, the focus has shifted to⁢ the second phase of this plan.

This second phase centers on Hamas disarming and⁣ the establishment of an internationally-supervised Palestinian committee to administer Gaza, supported by vetted Palestinian police and an international force. ⁤ However, ⁤Hamas has so far resisted calls to disarm, stating its willingness to surrender weapons only to a future Palestinian state.

Recent Violence and Ongoing Challenges

Despite‌ the ceasefire, violence continues. According to the Gaza ⁣Health Ministry, at least 88 Palestinians, including civilians, have been killed by Israeli forces since the truce began. Over the weekend preceding November 26,2023,two Israeli soldiers were killed‍ by Palestinian militants in southern ⁢Gaza. These incidents underscore⁢ the fragility of the current situation and the⁣ challenges facing the stabilisation effort.

Australia’s Regional Focus

The Australian Department of Defence stated that while the Indo-Pacific region remains Australia’s strategic priority, the government will carefully consider opportunities to contribute⁣ to international peace and security.‌ This deployment to Israel reflects that commitment.
