Australia’s cricket team will have a different look for their opening Test match against ⁤the West Indies. ⁣Marnus Labuschagne has⁢ been ‌dropped, and Steve Smith is out with⁢ an ‍injury. The ⁢first Test begins‌ June 25 in Barbados.

Teenage opener Sam Konstas and ⁤Josh Inglis‌ will fill⁢ the spots vacated by Labuschagne and Smith. Labuschagne’s recent performance, including scores of 17 and 22 in the World Test Championship final ⁣against South⁣ Africa, contributed to the ⁣decision. He ‍hasn’t scored a Test century⁤ as the 2023 Ashes series.

Selection chair George Bailey acknowledged Labuschagne’s potential but noted his recent performance has not met expectations. “Marnus at his‌ best can be a really crucial member of this team. He understands his output hasn’t been at⁣ the level ⁣we, or he, expects,” Bailey said. he added that the team ‍will continue to ⁤support ⁢Labuschagne in rediscovering his⁤ form.

Smith’s absence stems from a dislocated right little finger sustained during the final at Lord’s. Although he avoided surgery and traveled to the ⁣Caribbean, he will need to wear a ⁤splint for up to eight weeks. He⁤ might return for the second Test‍ in Grenada in July.

“Steve needs‍ more⁣ time for the wound to‍ heal so we’ll give him another week’s ⁢rest and assess ⁣his functionality after that,” Bailey said. he expressed excitement about the possibility for Inglis and Konstas ⁤to prove themselves. Bailey highlighted Inglis’s previous success in Sri Lanka, praising his ability to pressure the opposition.

Australia will assess Smith’s finger injury in a week to determine ⁣his availability for‌ the ⁢second Test.Meanwhile, ⁣Konstas and Inglis will aim to solidify their positions ⁣in the team ⁤during the first Test against⁤ the West‌ Indies.
