Australian BASE Jumper Dies in Wingsuit Competition in Italy
An experienced Australian BASE jumper has tragically died during a wingsuit competition in the Italian Alps. James Nowland, 30, was participating in the Pordoi Base competition when he crashed approximately 400 meters from the designated landing zone.
Tragedy Strikes at High-Altitude Event
The incident occurred on Friday during the prestigious Pordoi Base competition, an event that draws elite wingsuit athletes from around the globe. Nowland, who was based in Lupo Bianco for the competition, was scheduled to land at a specific point but tragically veered off course before impact.
A Beloved Member of the Community
The Australian BASE Association has paid tribute to Nowland,describing him as an “experienced and loved member of the worldwide Base jumping community.” A spokesperson for the association highlighted Nowland’s passion for the sport, stating he had been “jumping for many years” and cherished his time spent with friends in the “gorgeous mountain environments of europe.”
“All Base jumpers accept that the activity has risks, but this accident has still come as a shock,” the spokesperson added. “Our thoughts are with his family and all others who knew James at this tough time.”
BASE jumping is an extreme recreational sport that involves jumping from elevated fixed objects such as buildings, antennas, spans (bridges), and earth (cliffs), using parachutes or wingsuits.The Pordoi Base competition specifically features “top wingsuit athletes racing against each other to become the fastest in the world,” according to the event’s website. participants launch from the mountain summit, aiming to fly at maximum speed towards a finish line before deploying their parachutes for a safe landing.
