Labor Market Resilience
Australian job advertisements showed stability in August, indicating a continuing resilient labor market despite recent interest rate adjustments. Data released on Monday, september 4, 2023, from Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ) and employment website Indeed, revealed a 0.1% increase in job ads from July.
this slight increase follows an upwardly revised 0.6% decrease in job ads during July. Compared to the same period last year, job advertisements were 1.9% higher, and remain 15.1% above pre-pandemic levels.
Interest Rate Expectations
Madeline Dunk, an ANZ economist, stated that the ongoing strength in job advertisements supports the view that the unemployment rate will likely remain stable. She anticipates one further 25-basis-point rate cut from the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) in November.
The RBA lowered interest rates to 3.6% in August – its third reduction – as inflation cooled and unemployment edged higher. Concerns about a important downturn in the labor market have not materialized, with the unemployment rate recently decreasing from a 3-1/2 year high.
Sector-Specific Trends
Indeed senior economist Callam Pickering noted a significant rebound in job advertisements within the education sector in August, reversing a trend that had negatively impacted job growth earlier in the year. Strong growth was also observed in retail and food planning & service positions.
Pickering attributed the increase in retail and food service hiring to early Christmas season recruitment, anticipating a further surge as “black Friday” sales approach.
