Austria is preparing for meaningful travel congestion as holidaymakers mobilize for the Ascension Day weekend.Increased traffic is anticipated on roads and railways, coupled with summer-like weather and a few potential storms.
Roads are expected to be busiest starting Wednesday afternoon. The Ö3 traffic service reported early congestion on Vienna’s Südosttangente (A23), the Mühlkreis motorway (A7) in Linz, and major routes out of Graz and Innsbruck.
Southbound traffic is creating bottlenecks on the Pyhrn motorway (A9), particularly between Inzersdorf and St. Pankraz, and near roadworks between trieben and Treglwang. The Tauern motorway (A10) is facing delays due to ongoing tunnel construction between Golling and Werfen.
While traffic may ease slightly on Thursday and Friday, a major surge is expected at the weekend’s end as travelers return from southern Austria, Slovenia, and Italy. The ORF reports potential congestion on motorways in Carinthia, Salzburg, and Tyrol. The A10 around the Katschberg tunnel and between Eben and Golling are likely trouble spots, with delays possibly exceeding three hours.
