Austria Increases Transport Fees Amid Reforms

Travelers and residents in Austria should prepare for increased costs related‌ to public transport and driving.As part of the government’s latest cost-saving reforms, several fees are⁤ scheduled to rise in the⁢ coming weeks.

Starting July ⁣1, the fee for issuing a new driver’s license ⁢will jump to €178, an increase of €58.20. Applying for a new driving license will cost €90, up​ €29.50 from the current rate. These adjustments are part of a broader federal‍ initiative to ⁣align administrative fees with inflation ‌and boost budget revenue.

The popular KlimaTicket, Austria’s annual flat-rate pass for nationwide public​ transport, will also see a price​ hike. Beginning in ⁤August,the ⁢ticket will cost €1,300,up from €1,095.An additional €100 increase is planned for 2026.

Other subsidies and exemptions are also being reduced. This summer, the value-added ⁤tax (VAT) exemption for photovoltaic (PV) systems will end, ​and‌ the insurance tax exemption ⁢for electric vehicles will be scrapped.Additionally, free KlimaTickets for ‍18-year-olds⁢ will no longer be offered.
