Autumn’s Mixed Signals: Sizzling October, Chilly November, and a Frosty December
Early Winter Cold Expected to Arrive in Korea
Following a record-breaking heatwave, concerns are growing that winter cold could arrive earlier than expected in Korea. The Korea Meteorological Administration recently released its three-month weather outlook from October to December.
According to the forecast, October is expected to be hotter than usual due to the influence of a mobile high-pressure system. Temperatures are predicted to exceed average temperatures, with the difference between the highest temperature and the average temperature expected to be around 5 degrees. Additionally, the number of days with abnormally high temperatures in the top 10% is expected to be more than 3 days per month, which is more than the average year.
However, from November, the weather will return to somewhat chilly autumn, similar to previous years. From mid-November, cold air will temporarily move south, bringing an early cold spell. In December, when winter begins, temperatures are expected to be similar to or lower than average. Early winter is expected to start somewhat colder than usual.
The Korea Meteorological Administration said that temperatures may drop significantly in early winter as the cold continental high pressure expands. Due to topographical influences, it is forecast that there will be times when it snows on the west coast, so it seems that this region will need to prepare for heavy snow in the early winter cold.
Despite the cold start to winter, it’s unlikely to be cold all winter. There is a high possibility of transitioning to La Niña conditions in the fall, and temperature volatility is very high due to factors such as sea surface temperature and Arctic sea ice. The Korea Meteorological Administration urged people to be thoroughly prepared for health management due to rapid temperature changes and unusual weather.
Weather Outlook for October to December
- October: Hotter than usual, with temperatures exceeding average temperatures
- November: Somewhat chilly autumn, similar to previous years, with an early cold spell from mid-November
- December: Temperatures similar to or lower than average, with a cold start to winter
Preparation for Early Winter Cold
Residents, especially those in the west coast region, are advised to prepare for heavy snow in the early winter cold. The Korea Meteorological Administration also urged people to be thoroughly prepared for health management due to rapid temperature changes and unusual weather.
