Autumn’s Sneaky Arrival: Gugeulcho Blooms Amidst the Heat
Autumn Chrysanthemum Blooms Expected at Geumwonsan Ecological Arboretum
As the late summer heat continues, fall is quickly approaching, bringing with it the vibrant blooms of autumn chrysanthemums.
According to the Geumwonsan Forest Resource Management Office, the autumn chrysanthemum, Chrysanthemum amurense, at the Geumwonsan Ecological Arboretum in Geochang-gun is expected to start forming flower buds and bloom white and light pink flowers around the end of this month.
About Chrysanthemum indicum
Chrysanthemum indicum is a perennial plant in the Asteraceae family. It grows widely in the mountains and fields of Korea, spreading by underground rhizomes, and the stem grows straight to a height of about 50 cm.
Flowering Period and Characteristics
The flowers bloom one at a time at the end of stems or branches, facing the sky, from September to October. When they first bloom, they are light pink, but gradually turn white.
Origins of the Name
There are various origins of the name. The one picked on the 9th day of the 9th lunar month is the most effective and is called Gujeolcho. It is also called Gujeolcho by using the character ‘gu (九)’ meaning that the stem has nine nodes on the 9th day of the 9th lunar month, ‘jeol (節)’ meaning the 9th day of the 9th lunar month, and ‘jeol (折)’ meaning to break.
Wild Chrysanthemums
Chrysanthemums that bloom in the fall, such as Chrysanthemum chinensis, Aster chinensis, and Aster chinensis, are called wild chrysanthemums. Aster chinensis and Aster chinensis have light purple flowers, but Chrysanthemum chinensis mainly has white flowers and its leaves are divided into many branches. It is widely used as a medicine in oriental medicine because of its good medicinal properties, and its flower language is motherly love.
Geumwonsan Ecological Arboretum
Geumwonsan Forest Resource Management Office planted a large number of Chrysanthemums in the Geumwonsan Ecological Arboretum theme garden early this year to improve the landscape.
