Colorado Eagles Forwards Face Crucial Offseason to Prove NHL Potential

⁣ ‍ Updated ⁤May 27,2025

The colorado Eagles’ playoff run ‍concluded Monday with a ⁣Game 5 defeat against the ‌Abbotsford ⁣Canucks at Blue Arena in the Calder cup quarterfinals. Now, the focus shifts to the offseason, notably ⁣for forwards Oskar Olausson and Jean-Luc Foudy. Both players are at a pivotal ‌point in their careers,⁢ needing to demonstrate⁢ they can elevate their game to ‌the next level and solidify their status ⁤as top prospects within the Avalanche organization. Their growth as hockey prospects is key for the team’s future.

olausson, a⁤ late first-round ⁣pick in the 2021 NHL⁣ draft, acknowledged the importance of the coming months. “It was some good experience in the playoffs, but this offseason is going to be huge,” Olausson said.‍ “I sort of found my game a little bit, but⁤ it’s been‍ up-and-down this year. I’m excited ‌for next year and to get back ‌to work.”

Foudy,a third-round selection in the prior year’s draft, has battled injuries, presenting ⁢a notable⁤ hurdle. Despite being drafted by ‌the ‌Avalanche, Olausson and Foudy have yet to consistently meet expectations. Goaltender Trent Miner,a‌ seventh-round pick, was also on the ice Monday.Sean Behrens,⁣ a second-round pick, ⁢is injured, and Taylor Makar, a seventh-rounder, was a healthy scratch.

Olausson possesses notable NHL attributes,⁤ including⁢ strong skating, a powerful shot, and a sturdy build suited for scoring in challenging areas. ⁢However, consistently reaching ⁣those areas‌ and creating shooting opportunities has been a challenge. He has scored 11 goals in each of his three ⁣AHL seasons, a more remarkable ⁤total last season (in 39 games) than⁣ this year (in 61 games). In 16 career⁤ Calder⁤ Cup Playoff ⁢games, he has only one goal. He recorded an assist in each⁢ of the three games⁣ preceding Monday’s loss.

Eagles coach aaron Schneekloth‍ emphasized the need for improvement. “He’s got all the tools,” Schneekloth said. “When he’s playing his game, using his speed and skill,he’s dangerous.⁤ We’ve had conversations with him about it. It’s tough to get to⁣ the next level. Consistency, ‌strength,⁣ battles, some edginess — ‍that’s what he needs to work on.He comes to the rink‌ every day and he skates hard. It’s not the easiest path for ‌him, ⁣but he’s going ‍to need to be persistent.”

Foudy, while smaller, ⁤displays a fearless playing style. He has played ⁤13 games with the Avalanche, including scoring his first NHL goal in the 2023-24 season. This season, the Avalanche utilized 11 forwards who also played for the Eagles, in⁣ addition to rookies Calum Ritchie and Nikolai Kovalenko before ⁣they were traded. Foudy was ‍not among those called up, and Olausson only played‌ two games⁤ with the Avalanche.

Foudy scored a crucial goal‌ in Game 4, helping the Eagles reach the elimination contest. He⁤ is a restricted free agent, while Olausson has one year remaining on his contract. Undrafted center Ivan Ivan capitalized on ⁤an opportunity this season, playing 40 games in the NHL. Injuries and inconsistent performance have prevented Olausson and Foudy from securing extended⁢ opportunities with the Avalanche.

“It’s unfortunate,” Foudy ‌said regarding ⁢his injuries. “This year, the year before, but⁤ it is what it is, and you’ve got to learn⁢ from it.‍ It gives you a chance to work on stuff, like getting stronger. Every year,‌ you get a chance to reset in the offseason. You can get bigger and stronger, especially when you’re younger. (The Avs) have ⁣a great team, ⁢but it resets every year and you ‍get a new ⁢opportunity, so‌ we’ll see what happens.”

What’s next

Both Olausson and Foudy will focus on improving their strength, consistency, and overall game during the offseason, aiming to earn more significant roles with the Avalanche in the upcoming season. ‍Their‍ performance in the upcoming year will be crucial in determining their long-term NHL prospects.
