Cameron’s Stance on AI and Visual Effects
Director James cameron, known for pushing the boundaries of visual effects – especially in the “Avatar” films with their Na’vi characters – has expressed strong reservations about generative artificial intelligence (AI). He distinguishes his filmmaking techniques, like performance capture, from the technology he finds concerning.
In a recent interview with CBS Sunday Morning promoting the upcoming “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” Cameron explained that while performance capture might *seem* similar to generative AI, it is fundamentally different.
Performance Capture: A Celebration of the Actor
Cameron addressed past concerns that computer-generated imagery would replace actors. He stated, “For years, there was this sense that, ‘Oh they’re doing something strange with computers, and they’re replacing actors.'” Though, he clarified that performance capture is “a celebration of the actor-director moment.”
The CBS segment highlighted the “Avatar” cast performing scenes in a 250,000-gallon water tank, demonstrating the practical and performative aspects of the process.
Generative AI: A Cause for Concern
Cameron sharply contrasted performance capture with generative AI,which can create characters, actors, and performances from text prompts. He described generative AI as “horrifying,” emphasizing, “That’s exactly what we’re not doing.”
He believes generative AI’s ability to fabricate performances entirely removes the crucial human element of acting and the collaborative relationship between actor and director.
