Avatar: The Way of Water Beats New Movie Release 2026

ItS already the second weekend of the new year, and the American box office is still dominated by 2025 releases. This may sadden distributors, but it certainly pleases cinema owners. Preliminary estimates indicate that revenues in the first 11 days of this year are 23% higher than the results of the first 11 days of 2025.
Much of this is due to the spectacle Avatar: Fire and Ash, which took first place in the weekend rankings for the fourth time. The film by James Cameron might potentially be selling worse than the first two parts, but it still remains out of reach for the competition. Current estimates give it $21.3 million,almost twice as much as the number two film of the weekend. In total, the third Avatar is already in the top five highest-grossing premieres of 2025, pushing wicked: For Good out of it.

The same cannot be said for the new release from Angel Studios “I Was a Stranger“. The film premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in 2024, but only arrived in American cinemas now. However,it earned only $1.2 million, which gave it no chance of a place in the top 10. Fortunately, the studio is more than making up for the losses with the film “David“, which is the second highest-grossing title in the distributor’s entire history. Among older titles, “Wielki Marty“ is also noteworthy.
