AVELLINO, Italy – History took an uncanny turn this week as US Avellino secured promotion to Serie B, coinciding with the death of Pope Francis. The Italian soccer club’s 2-1 victory against Sorrento was followed less than 48 hours later by the Vatican’s declaration of the pontiff’s death at age 88. This marks the sixth time in nearly 70 years that Avellino’s ascent has aligned with papal transitions, a pattern dating back to 1958.
The timing has stirred considerable discussion, particularly in light of a recent meeting between the team and Pope Francis. In January, the pontiff received the Avellino players at the Vatican, even signing a club jersey.
“We are sure that his blessing also brought us luck,” said club president Angelo Antonio d’Agostino.
