Weight Loss after GLP-1s: success Hinges on Transition Strategy
Updated June 13, 2025
A new report challenges the assumption that weight returns after discontinuing GLP-1 medications. The study, conducted by Virta Health in partnership with Wakefield Research, suggests that a structured, medically supervised approach to stopping GLP-1s, combined with lifestyle adjustments, can lead to sustained weight loss and diabetes reversal.
The survey of 500 U.S.adults who had previously used GLP-1s for weight loss revealed that the method of transitioning off the medication significantly impacts long-term results. The research emphasizes the importance of a planned “off-ramp” strategy for those seeking to maintain their progress.
The report, titled ”Life After GLP-1s: The Power of a Planned Off-Ramp,” highlights that individuals who gradually reduced their GLP-1 dosage under medical supervision were significantly more successful at maintaining or continuing their weight loss compared to those who stopped abruptly.
Lifestyle changes, particularly dietary habits, also play a vital role. The survey found that individuals who maintained healthy eating patterns after stopping GLP-1s were more likely to sustain their weight loss or even lose additional weight. However, maintaining these habits long-term remains a challenge for many.
Despite the perception that GLP-1s are frequently enough viewed as a lifelong treatment, the survey indicates that many users prefer a defined course of treatment. A notable percentage of respondents used the medications for a limited period before discontinuing them, highlighting the need for effective strategies to support medication-free health outcomes.
“The doomed picture of life post-GLP-1s is a myth we’re actively debunking,” said Catherine Metzgar, PhD, RD, and health coach at Virta. “Our findings show that a personalized, nutrition-first approach, coupled with a professionally guided transition plan, can set people up to not only maintain their weight loss after GLP-1 use, but actually continue their journey. Ultimately, GLP-1s can ignite a path to durable health that lasts far beyond any prescription.”
What’s next
The findings suggest a shift in approach to weight management, emphasizing the importance of complete support systems that extend beyond medication.Further research is needed to explore the most effective strategies for guiding individuals through the transition off GLP-1s and fostering sustainable lifestyle changes.
