Avril Lavigne has released a cover of Alanis Morissette’s 1996 single Ironic for the soundtrack of the Canadian romantic comedy Mile End Kicks. The track was released on April 15, 2026, and is intended to accompany the film’s theatrical release in Canada on April 17, 2026.

Lavigne’s version of the song remains faithful to Morissette’s original arrangement. The recording begins with acoustic guitar riffs and soft vocals before transitioning into an electric guitar-led band sound during the chorus.

Film and Soundtrack Details

The film Mile End Kicks stars Barbie Ferreira as Grace Pine, a 24-year-old music critic. The plot follows Pine as she moves to Montreal in 2011 to author a book regarding the creation of Morissette’s 1995 breakout album, Jagged Little Pill.

In addition to Lavigne’s cover, the film’s trailer featured the song Time To Pretend by MGMT.

This recording marks a full-circle moment for Lavigne, who previously performed the song with Morissette. On February 11, 2005, Morissette invited Lavigne to perform a duet of Ironic at the House of Blues in Los Angeles during the first encore of Morissette’s concert, following a performance of Lavigne’s own hit Losing Grip.

The original version of Ironic served as the third single from Jagged Little Pill. The song became Morissette’s highest-charting hit on the Hot 100, peaking at No. 4 and remaining on the chart for 32 weeks.
