Apple TV+ has expanded the MonsterVerse through the series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, introducing a complex metaphysical environment known as Axis Mundi. This region of the Hollow Earth serves as a central plot element, blending elements of science fiction with the franchise’s established kaiju lore.
Axis Mundi is described as a place between places, functioning as a patchwork of different pieces of Earth and the Titans’ world. A defining characteristic of this region is its temporal anomaly, where inhabitants experience time at a significantly slower rate than those on the surface of the Earth.
Connectivity and Portals
Access to Axis Mundi is facilitated through a network of portals. These portals are similar to, or identical with, the Vile Vortices that lead to other areas of the Hollow Earth. Verified portal locations include:

- An abandoned nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan
- The U.S. State of Kansas
- Mount Osore in Japan
- Alaska
- The Algerian Desert
In addition to these natural portals, a separate rift to Axis Mundi was created on Skull Island using a device developed by Kentaro and Hiroshi Randa.
Historical Expeditions and Encounters
The first known human to visit Axis Mundi was Monarch scientist Dr. Keiko Randa, who entered the region against her will in 1959 and was presumed dead.
In 1962, Monarch initiated Operation Hourglass, an expedition intended to explore Axis Mundi. The mission failed, leaving the exploration party stranded. During this period, the party was preyed upon by the Ion Dragon. One member of the team, Captain Lee Shaw, eventually exited the region through a portal, arriving back on the surface in 1982.
Later developments in the series show Lee Shaw returning to Axis Mundi in 2015 alongside May Olowe-Hewitt and Cate Randa. During this return, the group encountered the Ion Dragon and the Endopede, creatures previously associated with String Theory
.
To stabilize the portal during this 2015 encounter, the group repaired Lee Shaw’s pod from the original Operation Hourglass mission and lured both Godzilla and the Ion Dragon to the site.
Conceptual Framework
The name Axis Mundi is derived from Latin, meaning world axis
. Within the narrative, Keiko Randa describes the region as The pole between heaven and Earth
.
Because it is. Parts of it, anyway. Different pieces of home. Different pieces of their world. All put together like a patchwork quilt. I don’t think this is the realm of the Titans at all. It’s a place between places. I call it ‘Axis Mundi’.
Keiko Randa
The series has been recognized for its contribution to the MonsterVerse, with some critical perspectives suggesting the Apple TV+ production may be one of the strongest entries in the franchise, noting an 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
