The Eisenbahner Sport Verein West (ESV) in Wuppertal expanded its athletic offerings on May 23, 2026, with the launch of a new double axe throwing division. The organization has established itself as the first double axe throwing club in North Rhine-Westphalia to secure comprehensive insurance for the activity.

The move addresses a critical operational hurdle for high-risk sports in the region. According to club chairman Guido Klees, having insurance is a distinct advantage given the nature of the equipment used in the sport, which involves heavy and sharp tools.

To mark the opening of the division, the ESV hosted an informational event on May 23, 2026, from 10:00 to 17:00. The event allowed interested members of the public to visit the newly established throwing facility and attempt the sport under professional guidance.

Safety protocols are central to the club’s business model for the new division. Guido Klees, who has been practicing axe throwing for two years, is responsible for the safety instructions provided to participants.

The equipment utilized by the club consists of axes made from carbon steel, each weighing approximately 1.5 kilograms. The sport requires a combination of physical strength and precision.

Among the early participants was Mario Lancioni, a 58-year-old who previously competed in Boule. After attempting the sport during the opening, Lancioni stated that while he could already feel it in your back after a few throws, the activity makes real fun and represents something new.

Klees, who aims to attract more people to the hobby, emphasized the legitimacy of the activity as a sport. He stated, We are not strange people, it is simply a sport and is incredibly fun.
