Isaac del Toro Clings to Giro d’Italia Lead After Grueling Stage
Updated May 27, 2025
Isaac del Toro weathered a storm on Tuesday to retain the overall lead in the 2025 Giro d’Italia, but his advantage narrowed after a brutal stage to San Valentino. The UAE Team Emirates rider saw teammate Juan Ayuso, once a co-leader, plummet down the rankings.
Ayuso, who began the day in third place struggled mightily and finished far behind, dropping to 17th in the general classification. This leaves del Toro as the team’s sole focus for the coveted pink jersey.
Simon Yates and Richard Carapaz applied pressure on Del Toro, reducing his lead to just 26 and 31 seconds, respectively. Despite the challenges, the young Mexican rider dug deep to limit his losses.
“I didn’t have the best legs of my life but that wasn’t an excuse,” Del Toro saeid. “I did my best with the energy I had.” He acknowledged the difficulty of the stage, stating, ”It was a very hard day for everybody… It was the pure spirit of cycling.”
Despite Ayuso’s struggles, Del Toro expressed pride in his team. “I can’t be prouder of the team. Without them, I couldn’t be in this position. We made the best strategy possible with the legs I had today,” he said.

Ayuso’s struggles were attributed to crashes sustained earlier in the race.”I spoke with Juan Ayuso in the morning,he didn’t have the best feelings. He had two crashes,” Del Toro said.”We tried to manage a little bit when he had a hard time on the second climb. He had a bad day.”

With Ayuso out of contention, UAE Team Emirates is now fully focused on supporting Del Toro’s bid for the overall victory in the giro d’Italia.
Del Toro acknowledged the threats posed by his rivals. “The three riders [behind me on GC] are perilous. They’re different kinds of riders. We need to be careful,” he said, also mentioning Derek Gee as a potential threat.
What’s next
Del Toro looks ahead to Wednesday’s stage, which includes the formidable Mortirolo climb. “I hope to have better legs tomorrow,” Del Toro said. “We’ll keep fighting all the way to Rome, we’ll see how my legs hold up. Of course, I am feeling tired like I think everyone is this deep in the Giro.”
